Pick of the week

Honda Civic Type R

Front-wheel drive, three pedals, and a wing you will have to explainRM 1,300 a day.

The shortlist

In the order we would hand over the keys

A ranking, not a price list — the Huracán and the Aventador are still ours, just further down the full fleet.

  1. 1

    Porsche 718 CaymanRM 1,799/day

The most complete driving car here, and the one the staff borrow.

  2. 2

    Porsche 911 Carrera SRM 2,800/day

The one you would keep, if the weekend were a year.

  3. 3

    Toyota GR SupraRM 1,699/day

The easy one, and that is meant as a compliment.

  4. 4

    Nissan GT-R R35RM 1,999/day

Old, heavy, and still not remotely normal.

  5. 5

    Porsche 718 BoxsterRM 1,500/day

The open 718, which for most of the year is the right 718.

  6. 6

    BMW M4 CompetitionRM 2,300/day

More car than the road has room for.

  7. 7

    BMW Z4 M40iRM 1,300/day

The soft option, and there is nothing wrong with that.

  8. 8

    Volkswagen Golf GTIRM 1,200/day

The sensible answer that is still properly fun.

  9. 9

    Porsche 911 GT3RM 4,500/day

The most car we will rent you. Plan the weekend around it.

  10. 10

    Ford Mustang 2.3 EcoBoostRM 1,149/day

The cheapest way in this fleet to be looked at.

The drives

Three drives inside an hour of the city

Karak

The E8 out of Gombak is fast, sweeping and well surfaced, and it is the reason a good half of these bookings exist at all.

Genting

The climb to the peak is a completely different exercise: second and third gear, hairpin after hairpin, air that gets noticeably cooler, and a surface polished smooth in places where the buses take the same line every day.

Bentong

Twenty minutes past the tunnel the traffic simply stops existing.

The Sunday morning Karak run, planned properly

Note

Manual, or paddles?

Most of the fleet is paddle-shift, faster and smoother in Klang Valley traffic than a clutch — but a genuine manual is still on the books for anyone who wants one.
